Accelerating Ventures 2022

MAVCAP is proud to host friends, thought leaders, and prominent speakers of the venture capital, technology and innovation industries at the inaugural Accelerating Ventures event. Guests came all the way from Hong Kong, Singapore and also from the UK to attend our event on the prospect of ventures in the region. We were also honoured to have 12 representatives ambassadors from Wisma Putra on a collaborative partnership effort to bring MAVCAP overseas and raise funds into Malaysia.

MAVCAP is Malaysia’s largest Venture Capital fund, leading with 21 years of experience in the VC ecosystem. This special event is to support our aspiration to further champion a dynamic venture capital ecosystem, throughout the nation and on a global scale. Throughout 21 years, MAVCAP has built a fund size of over 2 billion ringgit, generated revenue of over 10 billion ringgit through its portfolio companies, backed 2 global VC firms namely 500 and Gobi partners, supported 3 regional VC firms and developed 3 local Malaysian VC firms. The impact created from all these achievements include the creation of over 30,000 jobs and the birth of Unicorns such as Carsome, Bukalapak, Carousell and of course, Grab.

The event started with Mr Udhay Furtado, Managing Director & Head of Asia Equity and Capital Market from Citi that provided  an Outlook of the 2023 Economy particularly on the challenges and impact on Southeast Asia’s SMEs and Start-ups during global recession. This insightful talk set the scene for the panel discussion on the Opportunities and Risks in troubled times. Mr Karamjit Singh, Founder and CEO of Digital News Asia moderated the session together with an outstanding line up of panel speakers including Thomas Tsao, Co-Founder of Gobi; Khailee Ng, Managing Partner of 500 Global, Paramjit Singh, CIO of MAVCAP; Charles Wong, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of TNB Aura; and Varun Matta, Managing Director and Head of Technology, Media & Telecom and Financial Sponsors, ASEAN of Citi.

The panel session discussed on the best for the venture capital ecosystem providing important funding to companies and entrepreneurs which by the nature of their risk, wouldn’t be considered bankable to more their operations at scale. This matters because we are all in a sophisticated industry where multiple players play an important role in spurring innovation and national economic advantage. At MAVCAP, we strive to build the venture capital ecosystem in Malaysia, be it locally, or globally. We see the potential of talents in Malaysia, and we want to acknowledge excellence when it is earned.

The event also took the opportunity to honour MAVCAP’s partners that have made truly remarkable achievements and progress. We also want to congratulate everyone, our partners, and friends of MAVCAP. Together, when we make progress for the industry, we all win even amidst shocks we’ve experienced recently with the pandemic and global economic change.
